Verdict

Sweet Bonanza Xmas is the 2019 holiday version of Pragmatic's candy slot: 6x5 scatter pays, tumbling wins and bauble multipliers from 2x to 100x that add up in free spins. A 96.48% RTP on the provider page, a top win of over 21,100x and a working C$ demo make it easy to judge. The 2019 launch news called it high volatility while the game's badge says low, so expect bigger swings than "low" suggests.

Best for: Players who want simple rules, a holiday theme and a demo in Canadian dollars to try first

Skip if: You want several bonus mechanics, or steady results from a low-volatility game

What we like

  • Bauble multipliers from 2x to 100x add together on each tumble sequence
  • 96.48% RTP on Pragmatic's page; in-game rules show 96.49% to 96.60%
  • Top win advertised at over 21,100x the bet
  • Working demo in Canadian dollars with the buy button visible

Watch out for

  • Volatility sources disagree: high in the 2019 announcement, low in the game today
  • Buy Free Spins costs 100x and cannot be combined with the Ante Bet
  • A newer Sweet Bonanza Xmas 2500 may be confused with it in lobbies

The Sweet Bonanza Xmas slot is Pragmatic Play's winter version of its candy game, launched in November 2019. It uses a 6-reel, 5-row grid where eight or more matching symbols anywhere on screen pay, winning symbols tumble away to make room for new ones, and free spins bring Christmas bauble multipliers worth from 2x to 100x.

Pragmatic's game page lists a 96.48% RTP, the game advertises wins of over 21,100 times the bet, and the free demo runs in Canadian dollars. This review covers the rules, an honest look at a volatility label on which two Pragmatic sources disagree, and the Canadian casinos that list Pragmatic Play.

Sweet Bonanza Christmas: the 2019 holiday edition

Pragmatic Play announced the game on 28 November 2019 under the headline that the holidays had arrived, describing a 5x6 pay-anywhere slot. Some players search for it as Sweet Bonanza Christmas; Pragmatic's own name is Sweet Bonanza Xmas, and its internal code is vs20sbxmas. It is the holiday edition of Sweet Bonanza, with the multiplier bombs drawn as Christmas baubles.

Not the same as Sweet Bonanza Xmas 2500

Pragmatic's roadmap for the fourth quarter of 2026, published on 24 September 2026, announces a separate game called Sweet Bonanza Xmas 2500. That is a new title with its own rules. Everything on this page is about the 2019 original, and when you search a casino lobby the two may sit side by side, so check the name before you start.

Bet range in the demo

The demo set in Canadian dollars accepts bets from C$0.20 to C$240 in the standard mode, and up to C$300 when the Ante Bet is switched on. Real-money casinos may set different limits, and the game's info screen at each site shows them.

The paytable is short. Nine fruit and candy symbols pay for groups of 8 to 9, 10 to 11 or 12 and more. The red heart candy is the top symbol, worth 50x the bet for 12 or more, and the banana sits at the bottom with 0.25x for 8 or 9.

Casinos

Where to play Sweet Bonanza Xmas

How we know: a casino is listed when its published provider list includes Pragmatic Play; "seen" means the title was in its own top-games row on that date.

All casinos with Pragmatic Play games

Sweet Bonanza Xmas casinos and online casinos in Canada

Pragmatic Play appears on many of the provider lists we track. Among the Sweet Bonanza Xmas online casinos to check, OLG, Ontario's own site, lists Pragmatic Play. BetMGM Casino and FanDuel Casino list it on their Alberta and Ontario sites. Offshore brands such as Stake, Roobet and Casumo name Pragmatic too. A provider listing is not proof that this exact game is there, so search the lobby before you deposit. If several versions appear, pick Sweet Bonanza Xmas, Pragmatic Play's 2019 release, rather than the newer 2500 edition once that arrives.

The rules by province

  • Ontario: regulated sites are registered with the AGCO and hold an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario. OLG is the province's own.
  • Alberta: privately run sites have been allowed since 13 July 2026, provided they are registered with the AGLC and have signed with AiGC.
  • Elsewhere: the provincially run site is the regulated route. Offshore casinos are not licensed by any province.

The same brand can run its Ontario or Alberta site through a different company from its offshore site, with different games and terms. Sweet Bonanza Xmas casinos in one province may not offer the same version elsewhere. Players must be at least 19, except in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec, where the age is 18.

Features

How Sweet Bonanza Xmas plays

Base game and bonus features as the provider's rules describe them.

  • Tumble winning symbols disappear and new ones fall in until no new win appears.
  • Free spins 4+ lollipop scatters award 10 free spins; 3+ scatters during the round add 5 more.
  • Multiplier bombs free spins only: random 2x-100x (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 50, 100); all on screen are added together and applied to the tumble sequence win.
  • Ante Bet bet multiplier 25x instead of 20x (1.25x stake): natural free spins chance doubled, buy disabled.
  • Buy Free Spins 100x base bet (bet multiplier 20x only).

How tumbles and scatter pays work

There are no paylines. After each spin the game counts each symbol across all 30 positions, and any symbol that appears 8 times or more pays according to the size of the group.

Then the tumble begins. Winning symbols vanish, the ones above fall down, and new symbols drop in from the top. If the new screen makes another win, it pays and tumbles again. The sequence continues until a screen produces no win.

The lollipop scatter

The lollipop is the scatter, and it pays on its own as well as starting the bonus:

LollipopsScatter payAlso
43x bet10 free spins
55x bet10 free spins
6100x bet10 free spins

Lollipops pay wherever they land on the grid; they do not need to touch each other or sit in a line.

Reading the symbols

The four candies pay most: the red heart, the purple square, the green pentagon and the blue oval. The five fruits below them, the apple, plum, watermelon, grapes and banana, pay less. A group of 12 or more grapes pays 4x the bet, while the same number of red hearts pays 50x, so which symbol forms the group matters a great deal.

Free spins and Christmas bauble multipliers

Four or more lollipops start 10 free spins. During the round, three or more lollipops add five more spins, and that can happen more than once.

The bonus adds one symbol the base game does not have: the multiplier bomb, drawn as a Christmas bauble. Each one carries a random value from this list:

2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 8x, 10x, 12x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x or 100x

Baubles do not pay on their own. When a tumble sequence ends, all the baubles on screen are added together, and the total multiplies the win from that whole sequence. Two baubles of 10x and 25x would therefore make a 35x multiplier, applied once to everything the sequence paid.

What that means in practice

The biggest results come when a long tumble sequence and several baubles land in the same spin. A bauble on a spin with no win does nothing, so the multipliers only matter when the reels cooperate. The in-game banner advertises wins of over 21,100x the bet; the rules text gives no separate cap.

If you want the same idea without the holiday theme, the original Sweet Bonanza has its own review.

Ante Bet or Buy: the two paid options

The game offers two ways to change how often you see free spins, and they cannot be used together.

OptionCostEffect
Ante Bet1.25x your stake on every spinDoubles the natural chance of free spins; disables the buy
Buy Free Spins100x your base bet, onceStarts the bonus straight away

The Ante Bet raises the bet multiplier from 20x to 25x, which is where the 1.25x comes from. At the demo's C$0.20 minimum the buy costs C$20, and in the demo a C$2 bet showed a C$200 buy button.

How to think about them

  • Ante Bet spreads the extra cost across every spin. It suits a player who would spin anyway and wants the bonus to come round more often.
  • Buy Free Spins concentrates the cost in one large wager. A single buy can return far less than its price, so a run of buys can drain a budget quickly.

Neither option changes the fact that the game has a house edge. The buy only works at the standard 20x bet multiplier, so switch the Ante Bet off if you cannot see the button. Our bonus buy slots page covers the pros and cons in more depth.

Maths

RTP and volatility in dollars

Over a very long run, Sweet Bonanza Xmas is set to pay back about C$96.48 of every C$100 wagered; the house keeps about C$3.52. At C$1 a spin, 500 spins means C$500 wagered and an expected cost of about C$17.60 - real sessions land far above or below that.

The same game also exists at 96.49%, 96.60%. A lower version costs more per C$100 wagered, and the casino - not you - picks which one runs.

Low volatility: frequent small wins, the balance moves slowly. The cap is 21,100x: C$21,100 on a C$1 spin.

Sweet Bonanza Xmas RTP and the volatility label

The Sweet Bonanza Xmas RTP appears in two places, and they do not match exactly. Pragmatic Play's game page gives 96.48%. The in-game rules in the Canadian-dollar demo show a minimum of 96.49% and a maximum of 96.60%. We show the provider's page figure as the default and list the in-game range as other versions, because the build at your casino may differ. The info screen in the game is the figure that counts.

Low volatility, or high?

The game today shows a "LOW VOLATILITY" badge on its intro screen and in its rules. The 2019 launch announcement, though, quoted Pragmatic's chief commercial officer describing it as high volatility. We use the current in-game label, because that is the provider's own statement inside the product. Still, advertised wins of over 21,100x and multipliers up to 100x mean the bonus can produce very large swings, so do not read "low" as a promise of steady results.

Keeping it in proportion

  • At 96.48%, the game keeps about C$3.52 of every C$100 wagered over the very long run; single sessions vary widely.
  • The advertised top win is a rare extreme, not an expectation.
  • Set a spending limit before a holiday session, especially if you plan to use the buy.

The RTP versions guide explains why figures differ between sources, and the responsible gambling page lists limit and self-exclusion tools.

Demo play and the rest of the Sweet Bonanza family

The play-money demo Sweet Bonanza Xmas players can open above is Pragmatic Play's own version, set to Canadian dollars with a C$100,000 play balance. When it was loaded on 28 October 2026, the game rendered normally, spins completed and the Buy Feature button was visible. We have not yet opened it from inside Canada.

Sweet Bonanza Xmas demo play is useful for two things: seeing how often a long tumble sequence happens, and watching how baubles combine in free spins without spending anything. Try a few bonus buys with play money if you want to understand the swings. Wins in the demo are not real and do not predict real-money play.

Other games in the series

Pragmatic has built a long list of follow-ups. Sweet Bonanza 1000, Sweet Bonanza Super Scatter, Sweet Bonanza Dice and Sweet Rush Bonanza each have their own review, and Sweet Bonanza 2500 and Sweet Bonanza POP also exist. For more seasonal games, see Sugar Rush Xmas and Christmas Big Bass Bonanza. All of Pragmatic's titles we cover are on the Pragmatic Play page.

Who should play Sweet Bonanza Xmas

The game suits players who want to play Sweet Bonanza Xmas for the season without learning a new set of rules. Everything is visible: count the symbols, watch the tumbles, wait for four lollipops. The multipliers are easy to follow because they simply add up. With a published RTP and a working demo, you can check the important numbers before spending anything.

It is less suited to players who:

  • want a round with extra mechanics such as collect symbols, sticky wilds or a choice of bonuses;
  • expect the "low volatility" badge to mean small, steady results in free spins;
  • are tempted to use the 100x buy to chase a loss.

If you want a game from the same studio with more going on, the Pragmatic page lists our other reviews. Whatever you choose, check the RTP in the info screen and the casino's licence for your province first. Our rating method explains how the score above was reached.
