Slot Volatility and Hit Frequency in Dollars

Hit frequency: the figure most providers leave out

Hit frequency answers a simple question - out of 100 spins, how many return something? - and most studios do not print it. Nolimit City is the exception among the providers we review. Its game sheet for Mental gives a hit frequency of 34.19%, simulated from 10 billion spins, and its fan site lists 21.90% for Six Feet Under, a game dated 20 October 2026.

In practice, 34.19% means roughly one paying spin in three. It does not mean one winning spin in three: a hit includes returns smaller than the stake, so a spin can count as a hit and still lose you money. A lower figure, such as Six Feet Under's 21.90%, means a little more than one paying spin in five, with longer runs of nothing in between. Hit frequency also says nothing about size. A game can hit often with tiny returns, or rarely with large ones; that balance is what the volatility rating tries to capture.

Mental in dollars: where C$100 of spins goes

Nolimit City splits Mental's 96.08% return into the part paid by the base game (58.16%) and the part paid in free spins (37.93%). Spread over C$100 of spins at C$1 each, the averages are:

• about 34 spins that return something, some of them for less than the stake;
• about C$58 back from base-game wins;
• about C$38 back from free spins, which arrive once every 216 spins on average;
• a win of 100x or more about once in 831 spins, and the 66,666x cap about once in 18 million.

Those averages only hold over very long play, and the free-spin share is the reason. If each spin carries the same 1-in-216 chance, a run of 100 spins has roughly a 63% chance of containing no free spins at all. Most C$100 sessions therefore miss the C$38 entirely and return well under the 96.08%, while the rare session that lands a big feature returns far more. That is what an "Extreme (10)" rating means in dollars.

The same sheet lists a second version, DX1, at 94.20%. It looks identical on the reels and keeps C$1.88 more per C$100 wagered, so check the RTP line in the game's info screen.

Reading the provider scales

Each studio uses its own yardstick. Hacksaw Gaming rates out of 5, Print Studios and ELK Studios out of 10, Nolimit City pairs a word with a number ("Extreme (10)"), and Pragmatic Play and Reel Kingdom use low, medium and high. The common scale in the table maps them onto four steps - low, medium, high and very high - without changing the provider's own words.

Three patterns stand out in our reviews:

• Sequels often step up. Gates of Olympus is rated medium and Gates of Olympus 1000 high; Big Bass Splash is medium and Big Bass Splash 1000 high.
• Low volatility does not mean a small cap. Sweet Bonanza is rated low with a 21,100x max win, and Sweet Bonanza Super Scatter is rated low with 50,000x.
• Some games publish no rating at all. Play'n GO's pages for Book of Dead and Reactoonz show none, so those games are missing from the table rather than guessed.

Matching volatility to a budget

Volatility is really a budget question. Divide what you are willing to spend in a session by your stake, and compare that number of spins with how often the game's features arrive. On Mental at its minimum bet of EUR 0.20, the 1-in-216 free-spins rate works out to EUR 43.20 of spins between features on average - and an average hides long gaps. On a game rated low, such as Big Bass Bonanza with its 2,100x cap, the same budget buys smaller, steadier returns and a much lower ceiling.

Three habits help whatever the rating:

1. Pick the stake before the game, not after a loss.
2. Treat a bonus buy as a separate and larger cost: Mental's run from 80x to 1,000x the base bet.
3. Stop at the limit you set, win or lose.
