Verdict

Book of Dead is a simple ten-line slot whose free spins round, with one randomly chosen expanding symbol, still carries the game ten years on. The 96.21% RTP and the 5,000x top prize are sound. Play'n GO publishes no volatility rating, so that scores zero; the free browser demo earns the mobile mark. Check your casino's RTP line and its bonus exclusions before you play.

Best for: Players who like a classic ten-line slot with one big feature and a clear paytable.

Skip if: You want a bonus buy, a progressive jackpot or modern grid mechanics.

What we like

  • Clear 5x3, ten-line design with a full published paytable
  • Free spins with a random expanding symbol that pays across gaps
  • 96.21% RTP in the studio's own game-help file
  • Seen in 24 casino lobbies or promotion pages we checked

Watch out for

  • No published volatility rating from Play'n GO
  • Lower RTP versions may run at some casinos and are not listed publicly
  • No bonus buy; the only way into free spins is to land three Tombs
  • Some bonus terms exclude Book of Dead from bonus play

Book of Dead is the Play'n GO slot that sent explorer Rich Wilde into an Egyptian tomb in January 2016, and it is still one of the titles Canadian casinos put on their front pages. The design is old-school: five reels, three rows and ten paylines, with almost everything riding on one free spins round.

That round is the reason to play. Before it starts, one symbol is picked to expand across whole reels, and if that symbol is Rich Wilde himself, the paytable is built for a 5,000x line win. This page covers how the book of dead slot online plays, the 96.21% RTP, the free demo, the casinos where it was seen in the lobby and the bonus offers tied to it.

Book of Dead slot machine basics

The book of dead slot machine layout is as plain as modern slots get: a 5x3 grid and ten fixed patterns that can pay. The low symbols need three of a kind to pay while the four picture symbols pay from two.

The stake is built from three parts, and the demo shows how they multiply:

  • Lines - from 1 to 10 active paylines.
  • Coins per line - from 1 to 5.
  • Coin value - from 0.01 up to 2.00 in the demo.

In the demo that gives a range from 0.01 (one line, one coin at 0.01) to 100 (ten lines, five coins at 2.00), in demo credits. With all ten lines active the lowest stake is 0.10. Real-money limits are set by each casino, so check the bet panel on the site you use.

There is no bonus buy. You cannot pay to jump into free spins, which keeps the game's maths simple but means the only route to the feature is landing it. Playing with fewer than ten lines lowers the stake, but it also means fewer patterns can pay, and the expanding symbol in free spins pays only on active lines.

The symbol set mixes four card ranks and the 10 with four Egyptian pictures: Horus the falcon, Anubis, a Pharaoh and Rich Wilde. The Tomb is the special symbol, covered next. Volatility is one figure Play'n GO does not publish for this game, so we leave it blank rather than guess.

Casinos

Where to play Book of Dead

How we know: a casino is listed when its published provider list includes Play'n GO; "seen" means the title was in its own top-games row on that date.

All casinos with Play'n GO games

Casino online Book of Dead: where it was seen

Among book of dead online casinos, a provider list is only a first clue. Of the casinos we list, 49 name Play'n GO among their providers, and 24 had Book of Dead visible in the lobby or on a promotion page when we looked. The most recent sightings, all from 23 to 28 October 2026, are:

Older sightings on archived pages include PlayOJO and Lemon Casino (October 2026), Casumo (September 2026), Spin Samurai (May 2026), Jet Casino and Spinit (early 2026) and Quickwin (September 2025). Check those lobbies again before you sign up.

Your province decides which of these you can use legally. Ontario allows only sites registered with the AGCO that operate under an iGaming Ontario agreement; Alberta, since 13 July 2026, sites with AGLC registration and an AiGC agreement. A brand's Ontario, Alberta and offshore sites are often run by different companies with different terms. No province licenses an offshore casino. Nobody under 19 may play, or under 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec.

How Book of Dead plays

Base game and bonus features as the provider's rules describe them.

  • Free Spins 3+ Tomb scatters award 10 free spins; 3+ more during free spins re-trigger +10
  • Special Expanding Symbol one random regular symbol is chosen before free spins and expands to cover its reel, paying on active lines with gaps allowed
  • Scatter-Wild the Tomb scatter also acts as Wild and pays anywhere (2x/20x/200x total bet for 3/4/5)
  • Gamble optional card gamble on base-game wins: colour (x2) or suit (x4), up to 5 times, capped at 2,500 coins; does not change RTP

Free spins and the expanding symbol

The Tomb symbol does two jobs. It is the wild, standing in for other symbols on a line, and it is the scatter, paying anywhere on the screen: 2x the total bet for three, 20x for four and 200x for five. Three or more Tombs also start the feature.

The feature is 10 free spins. Before they begin, the game picks one regular symbol at random to be the Special Expanding Symbol. Whenever that symbol lands during the free spins, it can grow to fill its whole reel, and it then pays on the active lines even when the reels holding it are not next to each other. Landing three or more Tombs again during the round adds another 10 spins.

Which symbol gets picked decides most of what the round can pay. The table shows the line pays for each one, as a multiple of the line bet:

Symbol2 of a kind345
Rich Wilde10x100x1,000x5,000x

Horus5x30x100x750x
A, K-5x40x150x
Q, J, 10-5x25x100x

With a card rank picked, five on a line tops out at 100x or 150x the line bet; with the Pharaoh it is 2,000x and with Rich Wilde 5,000x. The stated top prize is 5,000x the stake, which Play'n GO's paytable puts as 250,000 coins at the 50-coin maximum.

The gamble option: when to leave it

After a base-game win, Book of Dead offers a card gamble. You can guess the colour of the next card to double the win, or the suit to multiply it by four. A correct guess lets you go again, up to five times, but the gamble is capped at 2,500 coins. A wrong guess loses the win.

Play'n GO's rules say the gamble does not change the game's RTP, which means it neither helps nor hurts you over the long run. What it does change is the shape of a session. A string of small wins can be turned into one bigger result or into nothing, and the decision comes at the moment you are most tempted to press on.

A sensible approach is to decide before you start whether you will use the gamble at all, and stick to that. If you find yourself gambling every win to chase a loss, that is a good moment to stop. Setting a deposit limit at the casino before you play takes the decision out of the heat of the moment; our responsible gambling page explains the tools Canadian casinos offer. The gamble is available on base-game wins only, so the free spins round always pays out as it lands.

Maths

RTP and volatility in dollars

Over a very long run, Book of Dead is set to pay back about C$96.21 of every C$100 wagered; the house keeps about C$3.79. At C$1 a spin, 500 spins means C$500 wagered and an expected cost of about C$18.95 - real sessions land far above or below that.

Book of Dead RTP: 96.21% and lower versions

Play'n GO's own game-help page gives Book of Dead a return to player of 96.21%. That figure comes from the studio's help file for the Malta jurisdiction; the default demo build hides it, so the number shown at a given casino depends on how that casino has set the game up.

The studio does not publish its lower RTP settings for this game in the open. That does not mean they do not exist. Many studios supply games at more than one return, and the casino chooses. The only way to know which version you are on is to check:

  1. Open Book of Dead at your casino, in demo mode if available.
  2. Open the paytable or the game rules from the menu.
  3. Look for the stated theoretical RTP.
  4. If it reads lower than 96.21%, you are on a reduced version.

An RTP is an average over a very large number of spins. Over a short session, a game built around one free spins round swings a long way from it in both directions, and the house keeps its edge in the long run. Our RTP versions guide explains why two casinos can return different amounts on the same title, and the volatility guide covers why a feature-led slot can feel streaky even with a mid-range RTP.

Play'n GO has built a long series around Book of Dead. The studio's own related titles include Book of Dead GO Collect, Legacy of Dead, Fate of Dead Blitzways, Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness, and Cat Wilde and the Pyramids of Dead. They share the theme and some of the characters, but each has its own maths, so read its paytable rather than assume it plays like the original.

Legacy of Dead has its own page here and is the closest relative: a January 2020 release on the same 5x3, ten-line frame with the same 5,000x stated top win, listed at a 96.58% RTP. If you want to stay with the studio or try another well-known slot, these pages are a good next step:

One rule cuts the other way: Evospin's general bonus terms list Book of Dead among slots that cannot be played with a bonus. Before you use any online casino bonus book of dead play, open the excluded-games list. Our wagering calculator shows what a 30x or 40x requirement means in total bets.
